Ever since the Steelers’ 2024 season ended, it was unclear who would be Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback to open the 2025 campaign.
Well, it appears that title will be occupied by one of the greatest players of all time.
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio on Monday night reported the Steelers and Aaron Rodgers could reach an agreement “as soon as Tuesday.” Pittsburgh and Rodgers reportedly started negotiating “several days ago,” and according to Florio, those talks “accelerated” when it became clear Justin Fields was going to leave the storied franchise. Fields on Monday reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with the New York Jets, who are expected to officially release Rodgers on Wednesday.
Florio noted there’s “a chance” the Giants prevent Rodgers from joining the Steelers. The veteran NFL insider believes the legendary quarterback could “jump at the chance to stay in New York” if Brian Daboll and company make him a “much richer” offer. However, as Florio outlined, Rodgers has a better chance to both play more than one season and reach the 2025 playoffs in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers went 10-7 in 2024 and reached the playoffs despite mediocre play behind center. Rodgers might not be lightyears better than Fields or Russell Wilson at this stage in his career, but the future Hall of Famer figures to be a more productive orchestrator of Pittsburgh’s new-look offense, which includes all-world receiver DK Metcalf.
