Penguins Make Slew Of Trades Before NHL Deadline Closes

Pittsburgh acquired considerable draft capital over three days

The Penguins were busy in the final three days of the NHL trade deadline.

Pittsburgh president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas on Wednesday acquired a 2028 fifth-round draft pick from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenseman Vincent Desharnais. On the same day, the Penguins acquired defenseman Luke Schenn and forward Tommy Novak from the Nashville Predators in exchange for Michael Bunting and a 2026 fourth-round draft pick. The moves didn’t stop there as on Friday, the Pens acquired a 2025 second-round draft pick from the Washington Capitals in exchange for forward Anthony Beauvillier.

The three trades meant Pittsburgh has 28 draft picks over the next three NHL drafts, which includes four first-round selections and 16 picks in the first three rounds.

Schenn scored one goal and tallied four assists for five points in 61 games for the Predators this season. The 17th-year veteran won two Stanley Cup titles with the Tampa Bay Lightning and skates in 47 career playoff games.

Nashville drafted Novak in the third round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. The 27-year-old scored 13 goals and registered nine assists for 22 points in 52 games this season. He spent his first four years in the NHL with the Predators.
