The interviews at the NFL Scouting Combine arguably are the most important part of the event, and it led to an interesting experience with the Pittsburgh Steelers for one prospect.
Quinn Ewers will look to impress teams when he works out Saturday. The Texas product revealed to CBS Sports’ Aditi Kinkhabwala and detailed where his conversation with Mike Tomlin went.
“It was funny. We started talking about my major,” Ewers told Kinkhabwala on Friday. “It’s like what Cardale Jones said, ‘We didn’t go to college to play school. No, but it was cool getting to talk to him. (My major was) ‘Physical Culture and Sports.’ He wanted to know what it was, kind of what my final GPA was. It was around a 3.3, 3.4-ish. He just wrote in down in his notebook. You know what they say, ‘C’s get degrees.’ I didn’t finish school yet, though.”
It’s not uncommon for teams to throw a curveball at prospects. Tomlin wants the best football players, but he also values people, too, which is why he’s one of the best head coaches in the NFL. Ewers noted that he didn’t do any whiteboard work with Pittsburgh and felt it wanted to get to know him more as a person. It’s not clear what Tomlin thought about Ewers’ unique major and his above-average GPA. But the 21-year-old could be on the Steelers’ radar, depending on how free agency plays out.
