The Steelers face a lot of question marks at quarterback and could look to a future Hall of Famer to fix their problems.
Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are set to become free agents in March. Pittsburgh general manager Omar Khan indicated it’s his team’s priority to bring at least one of them back. However, a weak quarterback draft class could create more competition in free agency. The Steelers will need to seek other options if they can’t retain Wilson or Fields, and Aaron Rodgers has long been a speculated target.
However, the soon-to-be former New York Jets quarterback reportedly reached out to the Giants to gauge their interest. New York controls the No. 3 pick but could be interested in signing or trading for a signal-caller. Still, if the 41-year-old is the one trying to drive up interest in himself, it raises multiple questions. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio believed it meant one thing for Pittsburgh.
“From Rodgers’ perspective, the interest in the Giants (if he’s indeed interested in the Giants) suggests he’s not generating interest from contenders like the Steelers.”
There certainly are pros and cons to the Steelers signing Rodgers. The Super Bowl XLV champion looked every bit of an over-40 QB and his best days might be behind him. On the other hand, the All-Pro signal-caller might have needed an extra year to recover from his Achilles injury. The Jets also aren’t the hallmark of a well-run organization, and the structure of Mike Tomlin and the Steelers might rejuvenate Rodgers’ career.
