Steelers Rumors: ‘Internal Optimism’ About Signing This Quarterback

Pittsburgh's plans behind center remain unclear

Back in late January, Steelers owner Art Rooney II revealed his “preference” was for Pittsburgh to retain one of its two top quarterbacks from the 2024 season.

Well, we might now know which signal-caller is more likely to stay in the Steel City.

“I know that there is some internal optimism or some sentiment for Justin Fields as an option as their quarterback moving forward,” ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler said on “SportsCenter” last week as transcribed by Yahoo Sports. “And that both sides are open to a potential deal.”

Fowler’s latest update was a follow-up to a recent report he issued, which revealed “some people” in the Steelers organization prefer Fields over Russell Wilson. That development wasn’t very surprising, as the past-his-prime Wilson will turn 37 a few months into the 2025 season while the 25-year-old Fields probably still has some untapped potential following a Chicago Bears tenure that was difficult to properly evaluate.

Of course, Pittsburgh doesn’t have a totally clear path to retain Fields since he’s bound for NFL free agency. And another AFC team that needs to iron out its quarterback situation potentially could convince the 2021 first-round pick to leave the Steelers.
