The Pirates officially added pitching depth Saturday.
Pittsburgh announced the signing of Andrew Heaney. The left-handed pitcher signed a one-year deal and added more depth to the pitching staff.
“We’ve had interest in Andrew each of the last two times he’s been a free agent and we are excited to see him join our rotation,” general manager Ben Cherington said in a press release. “We believe his track record and pitching style are a strong fit for our team and he strengthens and deepens our pitching staff.”
To make room on the active roster, pitcher Brett de Geus was designated for assignment. The Pirates released pitcher Yerry Rodríguez and reassigned pitcher Sean Sullivan to minor-league camp.
Heaney spent the last two seasons with the Texas Rangers, helping them win the World Series in 2023. The 33-year-old is one of four lefties to toss more than 150 strikeouts. The two-time Roberto Clemente Award nominee also is one of five left-handed pitchers to throw at least 145 innings and his 20 career games of 10 more strikeouts is the sixth-most among active southpaw pitchers.
