Penguins Honor Legendary Voice Mike Lange Before Capitals Tilt

'It's a hockey night in Pittsburgh'

The Pittsburgh Penguins returned to action Saturday after the 4 Nations Face-Off came to a close with Sidney Crosby and Team Canada winning gold in the final game against Team USA.

Before puck drop, the Penguins honored legendary broadcaster Mike Lange, who died last week at the age of 76, with a video tribute at PPG Paints Arena.

The video features Penguins coach Mike Sullivan recalling Lange’s famous “It’s a hockey night in Pittsburgh” lead-in for all televised games, followed by the iconic voice articulating those exact words.

The tribute features a variety of Lange’s calls, including goals by Penguin greats Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Evgeni Malkin, as well as accolades from Crosby and Bryan Rust, among a variety of highlights.

Instead of a moment of silence, the Penguins asked the crowd to join in a moment of celebration honoring Lange. You can watch the tribute here.

Lange’s legacy will live on, as he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001 with the Foster Hewitt Award. In 2019, the Penguins also named the press box at PPG Paints Arena in his honor, calling it the Mike Lange Media Level.

Unfortunately for the Penguins fans, Pittsburgh dropped an 8-3 decision to Washington in their first game after the break.
