Steelers Reportedly ‘Did Not’ Inquire About Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence

Pittsburgh still needs a quarterback

The Trevor Lawrence trade rumor linking the 25-year-old to the Pittsburgh Steelers may not have been true — at all.

Lawrence, the starting quarterback of the Jacksonville Jaguars, discredited the rumors immediately after getting thrown into offseason gossip, claiming he’s “happy” right where he is. The Steelers, of course, are in the market for a starting quarterback this offseason with last season’s Russell Wilson-Justin Fields tandem set to hit free agency. Lawrence became the latest to join a laundry list of speculative candidates, joining Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford and Jameis Winston.

It’s understandable considering Pittsburgh’s current position of having not won a playoff game in the past eight seasons, and while Lawrence himself dismissed the chatter, the Steelers reportedly never expressed interest to begin with.

“Per a source with direct knowledge of the situation, the Steelers did not call the Jaguars about Lawrence,” Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported Monday.

Jaguars head coach Liam Coen and recently hired offensive coordinator Grant Udinski eagerly expressed their anticipation for working alongside Lawrence next season. Lawrence is two years removed from his most recent Pro Bowl nomination and Jacksonville still has him under contract until 2030 — the Jaguars signed Lawrence to a five-year, $275 million extension before the 2024 season kicked off.

So there isn’t much of an incentive for Jacksonville to part ways before Lawrence’s fifth professional campaign.

“I’m beyond fired up to work with Trevor,” Udinski told reporters last week, per NFL.com. “Like I said about Liam — probably the same thing with Trevor — I don’t have enough words to explain how excited I am for the opportunity to work with him. The relationship side of it is something that takes time, not just me getting to know him but him getting to know me. This is a collaborative process. There are no dictatorships or anything like that in this business or on our team.”

Lawrence made 10 starts last season for the Jaguars, totaling 2,045 yards passing with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Jacksonville placed Lawrence on injured reserve after suffering a concussion in Week 13 and he also underwent surgery to repair an AC joint in his non-throwing shoulder. That marked the fewest appearances Lawrence logged in his NFL career, making his offseason priority apparent: health.

Pittsburgh’s offseason priority, on the other hand, remains unaddressed. Lawrence isn’t the answer, but the Steelers do need to identify a starting quarterback to entrust in 2025. Team owner Art Rooney II and head coach Mike Tomlin are under pressure to deliver and flip the script in the AFC next season after their tumultuous five-game losing streak to end this past season.
