NFL Analyst Doubts Steelers’ Potential Ceiling With Aaron Rodgers

Should Pittsburgh take the risk and sign Rodgers?

The Pittsburgh Steelers face a quarterback dilemma this offseason, and one future Hall of Famer might become available.

Aaron Rodgers is out of New York after two seasons, the Jets announced in a statement Thursday. The 41-year-old will be an intriguing free agent amid a weak draft class and other veteran quarterbacks entering the market.

Pittsburgh has a rock-solid defense and the offense led by Russell Wilson was good enough to make the playoffs. There is a case to be made that upgrading to Rodgers could elevate the Steelers’ ceiling. One NFL analyst wasn’t buying that argument.

“You have to be a team that adding Aaron Rodgers to your team takes you to the point you’re competing for a Super Bowl because if not, you’re just getting a stop-gap to get to a wild-card game at most and then you have to reset again next year,” Jason McCourty said on ESPN’s “Get Up” on Friday. “I look around the league and I don’t know if there’s a team that is like, ‘Hey, we can add Aaron Rodgers.’ Everyone’s throwing around the Pittsburgh Steelers. I don’t see an Aaron Rodgers-led Pittsburgh Steelers winning the Super Bowl or getting to a Super Bowl in the AFC with Baltimore and Buffalo and obviously the Kansas City Chiefs. That’s the challenge for a quarterback that is now going to be a year older coming off a subpar season off the thought of you get him and this elevates your team so much.”

The Steelers will need to decide if they want to bring back either Justin Fields or Russell Wilson. They could decide to bring back neither but then will need to decide the next course of action. It will be a pivotal choice for Pittsburgh as more options become available.
