The Steelers need to figure out what they’re going to do behind center.
Pittsburgh owner Art Rooney II already made it clear he would prefer if the franchise kept one of its top two signal-callers from the 2024 season. However, there’s a pretty easy case to be made that neither QB would set the Steelers up for success in 2025. Justin Fields lost the job once Russell Wilson was healthy, and the latter’s underwhelming play was a big reason why Pittsburgh collapsed in the second half and didn’t stand a chance in the playoffs.
So, is there a chance the Steelers aim higher when they address their QB situation? Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer can’t help but wonder if that could become the course of action in Pittsburgh.
“You’ve got T.J. Watt turning 31, and Minkah Fitzpatrick turning 29, and that makes you wonder if it’s time for the team to take a bigger swing on a guy like (Matthew) Stafford,” Breer wrote in his latest column for Sports Illustrated.
Breer pointed out how it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Stafford in Los Angeles, where the veteran signal-caller went through a “difficult” contract negotiation last year. The quarterback market has changed substantially since that juncture, and it remains to be seen if Stafford will be content with playing on his current deal.

Not to mention, Stafford might not be thrilled with the Rams’ plan to trade longtime favorite target Cooper Kupp. So if things really go south for the Super Bowl LVI champion in LA, the Steelers might want to pick up the phone.
