Why Pirates Should Consider Ex-Red Sox Bullpen Addition

Kenley Jansen remains available

The Pittsburgh Pirates still need some help in the back of the bullpen and the state of the market could present a short-term solution.

Kenley Jansen probably won’t be returning to the Boston Red Sox after two solid seasons and an All-Star appearance in 2023. The longtime Los Angeles Dodgers closer stayed on schedule even with two playoff absences during his time with Boston. He now searches for a fourth MLB franchise in five years. The Pirates would be wise to at least check in.

Aroldis Chapman flipped from the Pirates to the Red Sox in free agency and closer David Bednar struggled to the tune of a 5.77 ERA in 2024. Pittsburgh needs to address that area before spring training and Jansen can help bridge some production and even push higher on the all-time saves list.

Jansen sits at 447 saves as he prepares for his age-38 season.
