Pirates Rumors: Veteran Outfielder Lands One-Year Deal

Tommy Pham is headed to The Burgh

The Pirates continued making late-offseason moves Thursday.

Pittsburgh reportedly agreed to terms on a one-year contract with outfielder Tommy Pham, according to Katie Woo and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Pham’s contract will be worth $4 million, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, who confirmed the news.

Pham is extremely well-traveled, having previously spent time with the St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Rays, San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals — the latter two of which came last season alongside a second stint in St. Louis.

Pittsburgh’s active roster is already full, so it will need to make a corresponding transaction to accommodate the reported addition.

Pham is looking to reach several milestones at PNC Park, as pointed out by ESPN’s Buster Olney. The 36-year-old needs 15 hits for 1,000 in his career, 11 homers to reach 150 and 17 doubles to reach 200 — with a full season pushing him past 10 years of total service time in MLB.

The Pirates should be able to rely on him as a steady force in one of their corner outfield spots, perhaps forming a platoon with left-handed options Joshua Palacios or Jack Suwinski. Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz will be regulars, as well.
