Pirates Clear Roster Spot For Newly Acquired Veteran Reliever

Tim Mayza will pitch at PNC Park in 2025

The Pittsburgh Pirates made an outside addition this week.

Pittsburgh signed left-handed relief pitcher Tim Mayza to a one-year deal Monday. The Pirates also re-signed Ryan Borucki to a minor-league contract with an invite to spring training, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Mayza spent the first seven years of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays but was designated for assignment last summer after posting an 8.03 ERA through 35 appearances. The New York Yankees then took a chance on him and saw his number improve to a 4.00 ERA through 15 appearances.

It’s been a quick slip for the veteran, who surely is hoping a return to his home state of Pennsylvania will help him turn things around.

Mayza was 20-7 with a 3.47 ERA through his first six seasons in Toronto from 2017 to 2023, so there’s something there.

The Pirates designated infielder Alika Williams for assignment to make room on the active roster. Williams, 25, was originally acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays on June 2, 2023 and played a total of 83 games with the club and hit .202 with a .529 OPS, nine doubles, two triples and 11 RBIs.

Pittsburgh’s roster is now full at 40.
