NFL Insider Shares Take On Steelers’ Offseason QB Dilemma

Pittsburgh will have to make an important decision this offseason

While the Steelers rostering both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in 2025 is “unlikely,” franchise owner Art Rooney II’s “preference” is to have at least one of those quarterbacks in Pittsburgh next season.

So, who should it be?

There’s a case to be made for both signal-callers. The Steelers offense received a jolt of energy when Wilson was put behind center, and Mike Tomlin’s side rode the momentum to a playoff berth. However, the Pittsburgh offense wasn’t too bad with Fields leading the charge either, and the 2021 first-round pick might still have untapped potential.

ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano, for one, believes the Steelers should prioritize a possible high ceiling rather than try to make the most of whatever’s left in Wilson’s game.

“They responded well to Russ when he got in there, but it didn’t hold up,” Graziano said Monday on “Get Up.” “The coaching staff felt like they were making some progress with Justin Fields, and now you have him in a backup role for the rest of the year. You’ve sort of still been drilling him on, ‘Here’s what our expectations are. Here are the kind of things we want you to do differently if and when you get back in there.’ So, he feels like the better play if you feel like he’s starter-worthy.”

Of course, Pittsburgh signing Wilson or Fields wouldn’t necessarily mean either QB is locked in as the team’s Week 1 starter for next season. The Steelers definitely should look to draft a player at the position this spring, and they reportedly could be in the mix to add a Super Bowl-winning signal-caller in free agency.
