The Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback job is up for the taking.
Neither Russell Wilson nor Justin Fields are under contract beyond this season. Will either return? Could the Steelers make a run at a different guy? At this point, there is no way to know. There has been rumblings about both Wilson and Fields and there has been reports that either would be open to a possible return.
Wilson went on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Wednesday and opened up about how he wants to return to Pittsburgh, as transcribed by Pro Football Talk’s Myles Simmons.
“Going into Pittsburgh was a special place for me,” Wilson said as transcribed by Simmons. “Hopefully I get to play there for a lot longer. It’s a special place because of the guys in the locker room, the traditions, and the people, and the winning, and all of that. Plus, you’ve got Mike Tomlin, who’s arguably the best coach of all time — one of the top ones, just because of who he is and how he motivates us. Even through the storm, I think we battled and a lot of that was because of coach Tomlin and who he is and how he makes us prepare.”
Wilson clearly is open to a return. Do the Steelers want him back? Everything is completely up in the air right now. Free agency isn’t going to kick off until March. We have a long offseason of question marks ahead of us.
