Pirates Slugger Fights Back Against Cam Newton’s Baseball Take

McCutchen wasn't having any of it

After rejoining the Pittsburgh Pirates this offseason, a certain slugger had some choice words for a former NFL MVP after his comments about the state of baseball.

Andrew McCutchen re-signed with the Pirates with a one-year, $5 million deal on Dec. 23 — allowing Pittsburgh to bring back their clubhouse leader. The 2013 National League MVP has had a great 16-year career and has thrived on the diamond year after year. It shouldn’t be as shocking that he was ready to defend baseball against Cam Newton.

Newton spoke about the state of baseball on his podcast “4th&1 with Cam Newton” — calling it a dying sport. The former Carolina Panthers quarterback also went as far to say that he believes that the WNBA would surpass baseball in popularity over the next 20 years.

McCutchen had a simple response to the comments by Newton on X, one that baseball fans may agree with.

“He talks about baseball like a person who has never been around baseball talks about baseball,” McCutchen wrote on the social media website.

And it’s hard to side with Newton when this year’s World Series had some of the best viewership numbers since 2017 — including an average of 15.8 million people watching per game in the United States, a 67% increase from a season ago.

It remains to be seen if this back-and-forth between baseball players and Newton will continue, but you have to respect McCutchen for backing up his sport.
