The Pirates reportedly added another option at first base last Thursday.
Pittsburgh signed first baseman Darick Hall to a minor-league contract with an invitation to big-league spring training, according to Steve Potter of PhilliesBaseballFan.com. Hall confirmed the news himself over the weekend.
Hall could provide a left-handed hitting option at first base, having flashed power in the minors with three straight years of 20-plus homers to begin his professional career. The Phillies eventually gave him a shot at the bigs in 2022 when he slashed .250/.282/.522 with nine homers and 16 RBI in 41 games.
The 29-year-old eventually tore a ligament in his thumb that put him on the shelf in 2023, which marked the last time he appeared at that level.
Spencer Horwitz, who was acquired in a trade two weeks ago, looks primed to be the starting first baseman and will primarily play against right-handed pitching. The Pirates could use added depth, however, which comes in the form of Hall.
