The Pittsburgh Pirates are bringing a legend back to town for the 2025 Major League Baseball season.
After some speculation and rumors, the Pirates are bringing five-time All-Star and 2013 National League Most Valuable Player Andrew McCutchen back for the 2025 season on a one-year deal, according to the team.
“Source: He’s back,” the team shared on social media accompanied by a video of McCutchen running the bases and pumping his fists.
MLB.com’s Alex Stumpf followed up with a report that the deal is for one year and worth $5 million.
“Andrew McCutchen’s new deal with Pirates is for one year, $5 million, per source,” Stumpf said.

McCutchen now is 38 years old but clearly showed that he has something left in the tank in 2024. He appeared in 120 games with the Pirates and hit 20 home runs, drove in 50 runs, tallied 18 doubles, and slashed .232/.328/.411. McCutchen was very solid on the field and is an important voice in the Pirates’ clubhouse.
Pittsburgh is loaded with young talent and keeping a team legend like McCutchen around for another year — especially when he still is one of the team’s best players — is a no-brainer of a move.
The Pirates won 76 games in 2024 and should take a step forward in 2025. Pittsburgh has had a solid offseason so far and the National League Central is vulnerable. Bringing McCutchen back is a great move and should help the Pirates as they look to make a run at a playoff spot in 2025.
