There are key defensive areas where the Pittsburgh Steelers can improve in the offseason.
The 10-5 Steelers remain atop the AFC North despite losing to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16. Pittsburgh can clinch the division by winning out but is dealing with injuries on both sides of the ball. The Steelers’ typically elite defense has struggled recently, allowing 27 or more points in three of their last four games.
Indianapolis Colts safety Julian Blackmon has been linked to the Steelers as a player to target in free agency to improve their defense, according to Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department.
“Minkah Fitzpatrick is obviously one of the Steelers’ biggest stars on defense, but he’s at his best when Pittsburgh can unleash his potential all over the field. That requires a good safety to play with him who can cover the deep third and make plays in coverage. With that in mind, the Steelers would be wise to make a run at Julian Blackmon in free agency.”
“The 26-year-old is at his best as a deep safety as he ranks 18th in coverage grade by PFF. The Colts only signed him to a one-year deal last offseason, so it’s possible that Pittsburgh could have an advantage by simply offering a multiyear contract.”

Fitzpatrick has been consistent for Pittsburgh for years. The veteran safety has 86 total tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception this season, contributing to a defense that ranks seventh in points allowed per game at 19.9. Adding a ball-hawking safety like Blackmon to pair with Fitzpatrick would be a great way to improve the defense for next season.
