Steelers Need Star George Pickens Healthy To Make Deep Playoff Run

Pickens' presence improves the Steelers offense tremendously

The Pittsburgh Steelers offense struggled against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15 with star wide receiver George Pickens out with a hamstring injury.

This was the second straight game that Pickens missed since injuring his hamstring in Week 13. Pittsburgh’s offense has not performed well with Pickens out, averaging 215 total yards per game. Russell Wilson averaged only 143 passing yards during the two games as well. Pickens averages 70.8 receiving yards per game, according to statmuse, leaving a major offensive hole in his absence.

The Steelers need to ensure that Pickens is healthy for the playoffs to make a playoff run, according to Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department.

“If there’s one thing to take away from Sunday’s game as far as the offense is concerned it’s the importance of receivers who can win one-on-one matchups. The Eagles had two in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. They had huge days. The Steelers’ answer, George Pickens, was on the sideline with a hamstring injury.”

“Reports on Pickens’ return have been unclear. Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that he might not be back until the season finale against the Bengals. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported the team was ‘hopeful’ he’ll be ready for the Ravens next week. Either way, the Steelers have to make sure he’s healthy for the playoffs. It’s hard to see them winning a playoff game without him.”

The sooner that Pickens can return, the better. Pittsburgh faces division rival Baltimore Ravens in Week 16 with a lot on the line, as a victory would secure the AFC North title for the Steel City and a home playoff game. The Steelers have a greater chance to make a deep playoff run with Pickens active.
