The Pittsburgh Steelers may look to add to their secondary this offseason to improve their defense.
Pittsburgh fell short to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15, losing 27-13. The Steelers’ typically elite defense could not stop the onslaught from the Eagles’ offense, allowing 410 total yards. Pittsburgh’s secondary could not stop Jalen Hurts, who threw for 290 yards, and was shorthanded with cornerback Donte Jackson getting injured in the second quarter.
The Steelers were listed as a potential landing spot for Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Avonte Maddox in free agency to add depth to the secondary, according to Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department.
“The Steelers are woefully short on slot defenders. Undrafted free agent Beanie Bishop Jr. has done an admirable job as the starter, but it wouldn’t be wise for him to be the only option going into 2025. It’s not a premium position, but bringing in a veteran could give the secondary the depth they need.”
“Avonte Maddox is a longtime slot defender for the Eagles. He has had his fair share of ups and downs, but there has been more good than bad. He’s headed toward his age-29 season, but he’s done well this season and held opponents to a 76.2 passer rating when targeted.”

Maddox has been with the Eagles for his whole seven-season career. He’s appeared in 14 games for Philadelphia this season, defending five passes and recording seven solo tackles. Adding a corner like Maddox would benefit the Steelers, adding depth and a veteran presence in the secondary.
