Steelers May Look To Bring Back Both Quarterbacks Next Season

Pittsburgh will have some decisions to make

The Pittsburgh Steelers are focused on this season but question marks are already being raised ahead of some big decisions this offseason.

Over this past offseason, the Steelers went out of their way to address the quarterback position by moving on from Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, and Mason Rudolph to sign Russell Wilson and trade for Justin Fields. The decision to change things up has proved to be the right move for head coach Mike Tomlin, as his team is off to a 9-3 start and is sitting atop the AFC North. But what do they do after this season?

Wilson is on a one-year deal while Fields’ rookie contract also runs out at the end of the campaign. Both quarterbacks will have an opportunity to hit free agency, meaning Pittsburgh will need to make a decision.

ESPN’s Brooke Pryor discussed the quarterback situation and the potential of bringing one (or both) back in the offseason saying that is too soon to tell — citing that it will depend on what the Steelers want, the market, and what the two quarterbacks ultimately want for their futures.

“It’s too soon to tell. The Steelers don’t negotiate contracts during the season, so anything with these quarterbacks — both of whom will be free agents — will have to wait until after the book closes on 2024,” Pryor wrote. “Their ability to bring back one or both will largely be dictated by the quarterback market — and the long-term desire of each player.

“Wilson, who just turned 36, looks revitalized in six starts. Since he took over the starting job in Week 7, he has thrown the 10th-most touchdown passes in the league (10) and has the 11th-most passing yards (1,626). The 25-year-old Fields also showed his upside in his six-game stint to start the season, when Pittsburgh went 4-2.

“Wilson said last month he wanted to play five to seven more seasons, so if the Steelers aren’t willing to give him more than a three-year deal, it might be difficult to keep him.”

For now, the Steelers are going to keep moving forward with the goal of a Super Bowl win. They’ll look to earn their 10th win Sunday when they face the Cleveland Browns.
