Ex-MLB Executive Believes Pirates Could Make ‘Surprise’ Addition

Is Ben Cherington going to make a splash?

The Pirates typically aren’t among the biggest spenders each offseason, but that doesn’t mean they can’t go out and make a splash deal or two.

Pittsburgh is actually believed to do just that in 2024.

The Athletic’s Jim Bowden was asked whether or not “small-market” teams would consider spending in free agency in his latest mailbag, and mentioned the local ballclub as a potential option to go out and make an impact signing.

“The Nationals have been penny-pinching for the last several years, and I think they’ll start spending this offseason or at least try to,” Bowden wrote. “I also believe the Pirates might surprise us by landing a solid free-agent bat.”

Did he give any examples? No, but we believe the former big league general manager had a few middle-tier bats in mind, like Tyler O’Neill, Jurickson Profar, Gary Sanchez or perhaps even Alex Verdugo. It remains to be seen which will be available to Pittsburgh, but there’s something comforting about the idea of a big bat joining the Buccos.
