Steelers’ Russell Wilson Floated As Possible Option For 2025 Season

Who is the long-term answer?

The Pittsburgh Steelers have done this season to certainly be considered Super Bowl contenders.

Pittsburgh is 8-2 on the season and 4-0 with nine-time Pro Bowler Russell Wilson under center. The Steelers have found ways to win games no matter who was starting at quarterback, but Pittsburgh definitely looks like it can do some damage with Wilson out there.

It’s been a great season so far and no matter what happens down the stretch, the Steelers will have a question mark hanging over the organization. Neither Wilson, nor Justin Fields are under contract for next season. Pittsburgh will have to decide who it wants to be its quarterback in 2025 and The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo suggested Wilson.

“Current starting quarterback: Russell Wilson,” DeFabo said. “Potential 2025 starting quarterback: Russell Wilson. The Steelers created one of the most unique quarterback rooms in the league last offseason when they signed Wilson, traded Kenny Pickett, and acquired Justin Fields. What comes next may be even more significant. Getting Wilson for just $1.2 million and Fields for only a conditional sixth-round pick made both additions low-risk, low-cost investments…

“Wilson, who turns 36 later this month, has also said he wants to play another five or six seasons. Will he be willing to accept far less than the $40 million he made in 2024? Will he take a short-term deal or look for one last big contract?”

He certainly has looked like his old self while under center for the Steelers. It makes sense to keep him around for the next few years, but this is a question the team will have to sort out at a later date.
