Multiple Pittsburgh Pirates prospects have performed well in the Arizona Fall League.
The Pirates are looking toward next season after finishing 76-86 for the second straight year. Each offseason, teams send top prospects to the AFL to be guided by league and club personnel. This league provides prospects the ability to develop further as they aim to crack the big leagues.
Pirates’ prospects Derek Diamond, Sammy Siani, and Geovanny Planchart were all named to the Arizona Fall League All-Star game, according to Sports Illustrated’s Nathaniel Marrero.
“Three Pittsburgh Pirates prospects will be playing in the Arizona Fall League’s Fall Stars Game,” Marrero said. “Pirates right-handed pitcher Derek Diamond, outfielder Sammy Siani and catcher Geovanny Planchart are the trio that will represent Pittsburgh in the game. The Fall Stars Game is at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday and the teams are divided by American League and National League like the Summer Classic.”
“Siani headlines the list and has been one of the best hitters throughout the AFL. Planchart hasn’t had the same amount of playing time but has made the most of it when he’s been on the field. Diamond has been a steady presence on the mound through his seven appearances in the AFL, which includes one start.”

Siani led the AFL with a staggering .406 batting average. He also hit three home runs and drove 16 runs in. Planchart slashed .345/.457/.586 in ten appearances, while right-handed pitching prospect Diamond had a 2.45 ERA through 11 innings pitched and struck out 12 batters. These young prospects are players to watch in the future for Pittsburgh.
