Steelers Quarterback Russell Wilson Has Surprising Free Agent Ranking

Wilson will be a free agent after the season

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 6-2 and one of the hottest teams in football.

Pittsburgh is in first place in the AFC North and has looked fantastic since Russell Wilson took over the starting quarterback job. That isn’t a slight at Justin Fields by any means. He was great in the first six games of the season for the Steelers and was 4-2 before Wilson took over.

Wilson is a nine-time Pro Bowler and has tallied 542 passing yards and three passing touchdowns over the last two weeks while also chipping in one rushing touchdown. He has been everything the Steelers could’ve hoped for and the team has a big matchup ahead of it this week against the Washington Commanders.

It’s a little early to think about free agency after the season, but we are over halfway through the season, and Wilson is playing well and will be a free agent. Will he be back in Pittsburgh in 2025? It’s far too early to know. While this is the case, he should be considered one of the top free agents coming up.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox put together a list of the top free agents for the upcoming offseason and surprisingly had Wilson at No. 26.

“It’s still too early to move Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson into the top 25, but he’s trending in that direction,” Knox said. “He’s only made two starts for Pittsburgh but has played well enough to start reestablishing his value after two down years in Denver. Wilson is 2-0 with the Steelers and has a career-high 111.9 passer rating—albeit with an extremely limited sample size.

“Should Wilson continue playing at his current level, he could be a top target for otherwise talented teams in need of a quarterback—as Kirk Cousins was for the Atlanta Falcons this past offseason. Of course, Wilson didn’t pan out in Denver, and he’ll turn 36 later this month. Should he regress, his days as an NFL starter could be over.”

If Wilson continues to stack up wins, he certainly will be better than the 26th-ranked free agent.
