Insider Believes Steelers Could Make Deal For Non-Wide Receiver

Pittsburgh is looking to improve everywhere

The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to improve at the NFL trade deadline — even if it’s improving at a position different from wide receiver.

Dating back to the preseason, the talk of the NFL has been the Steelers wanting to acquire a wide receiver to pair alongside George Pickens. The fix hasn’t been found yet, but they’ve certainly tried along the way. It started with San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who held out for a new contract throughout the preseason. Then it was veteran wideout Davanate Adams, the wide receiver who the New York Jets were able to add instead. And then, of course, was Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Christian Kirk, who broke his collarbone before a deal could be made.

With all the shortcomings in the wide receiver trade market, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac believes that Pittsburgh could improve elsewhere before the trade deadline hits on Tuesday.

“I will tell you this,” Dulac said on WDVE Radio, as transcribed by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Nick Farabaugh. “I will not be surprised at all if the Steelers make a trade. I’m not gonna sit here and tell you I expect it, but I’m not exactly sure it will be for a wide receiver. I think there’s some other avenues they might pursue. I don’t think, if that’s the case, it’s gonna be anything blockbuster, that’s for sure, but I do think they might make a deal to help improve their depth. And you could look at maybe certain important positions where they’re lacking in a little depth because of injuries. So that wouldn’t surprise me at all.”

Pittsburgh is coming off the bye week with the hope of getting some banged-up players back, but a deal could still be on the horizon for a team that has a chance at the Super Bowl.
