Steelers Urged To Consider Trade For Former Second-Round Pick

Would a deal make sense?

The Pittsburgh Steelers have one clear need right now.

Pittsburgh made a change at quarterback to the surprise of some ahead of the team’s Week 7 clash against the New York Jets. Russell Wilson is fully healthy now after dealing with a calf injury. Justin Fields was very solid in the team’s first six games, but the Steelers plugged Wilson in against the Jets and he shined as the team moved to 5-2 on the season.

Things really are looking up for the Steelers. They showed a lot of heart against the Jets and very well could make some noise this season. The thing that would really help Pittsburgh would be more depth at wide receiver. The team has been trying hard to get a deal done and the trade deadline is approaching.

Will Pittsburgh be able to get something done? It’s unclear. But, it’s not from a lack of trying.

There will be other players out there who could interest the Steelers, and Bleacher Report’s scouting department suggested Houston Texans receiver John Metchie III as a fit in a trade.

“Regardless of whether it’s Russell Wilson or Justin Fields playing quarterback, the Steelers need more pass-catchers,” Bleacher Report said. “Pat Freiermuth and George Pickens have been good for the quarterbacks, but the Steelers other options just aren’t threatening defenses.

“John Metchie III doesn’t have a long track record of production, but he’s been lost in the shuffle in Houston. The Texans have one of the deepest groups of receivers and he just hasn’t been used much. Perhaps giving him a fresh start in Pittsburgh could be beneficial for all parties.”

Metchie was a second-round draft pick in 2022 and has just one catch so far this season because Houston’s receiver room is stacked. Maybe the 24-year-old could be worth taking a cheap flier on this fall.
