The Pittsburgh Pirates have a handful of players hitting free agency this winter.
The Pirates impressed in 2024 and took a step in the right direction. Pittsburgh won 76 games in 2024 and competed for a playoff spot for much of the season. Things didn’t go the Pirates’ way in the second half of the season, but Pittsburgh’s young core took a massive step forward.
Pittsburgh should take another step in 2025 and could make some noise and maybe even earn a playoff spot.
Before we get to the 2025 season, though, the Pirates will need to handle free agency. It wouldn’t be shocking if the Pirates were to add some players. Pittsburgh also has some players hitting free agency who could return or leave. It’s too early to know about that at this point.
One player who will be hitting free agency is two-time All-Star catcher Yasmani Grandal. The 35-year-old will be a free agent and currently is projected to get a $1.3 million deal across one season by Spotrac.

It’s far too early to tell if a deal like that will be with Pittsburgh or not, but that at least is the projection of his market value at this point with the postseason still ongoing.
Grandal joined the Pirates ahead of the 2024 season and appeared in 72 games. Over that stretch, he clubbed nine home runs and drove in 27 runs while slashing .228/.304/.400. He was a very solid piece for the Pirates, and now he and the organization have a decision to make. Keep an eye on him this winter.
