Steelers Justin Fields Opens Up On His Performance This Season

Fields believes he could've played better up to this point

The Steelers will likely have a new starting quarterback helming the offense this week as they take on the New York Jets in primetime Sunday night.

When the Steelers signed Russell Wilson in the offseason, it was assumed he would start despite them also trading for Justin Fields. Wilson’s preseason ankle injury changed everything for the team, as Fields stepped up to lead the offense.

Fields led the team to a 4-2 record through six weeks of the season. During that time, he amassed 1,106 yards through the air with five touchdowns to only one interception. He also added 231 yards and another five touchdowns on the ground. With the return of Wilson imminent, it seems Pittsburgh is trending toward starting Wilson over Fields.

Fields was candid when speaking to reporters Thursday morning about his performance through the first six weeks according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Ray Fittipaldo.

“I don’t think I’ve played good enough, if I’m being real with you,” Fields said. “If I’m being real with myself, I think if I did play well enough, I don’t think there would be any sort of, ‘Who should be playing and who shouldn’t?’

“At the end of the day, we got a few wins. I’m glad about that, but there are areas I can be better at, and I’m going to continue to work on those.”

Fields has performed admirably this season, but Wilson’s a former Super Bowl champion and was brought in to lead the Steelers. Pittsburgh’s outlook on quarterback for the rest of the season is unclear, but either way, they are in a good place to make a playoff run this season.
