The Steelers appear to be making a change at quarterback.
Pittsburgh plans to give Russell Wilson first-team reps in practice this week, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, putting him in line to make his season debut and start next Sunday against the New York Jets.
The Steelers leaned on Justin Fields to start the season and were guided to a 4-2 record that included a bounce-back victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Wilson was a full participant at practice last week, however, and now appears to have worked his way back into the starting lineup with his fully-healed calf.
Wilson was briefly involved in trade rumors, but those quickly were shot down as it became clear Pittsburgh could use an upgrade at the most important position in the sport.
“Russell Wilson is currently the backup quarterback behind Justin Fields for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but that doesn’t mean the AFC North team is open to trading him.” Bleacher Report’s Scott Polacek wrote last week. “There have been no trade talks surrounding Russell Wilson.”
