Pirates Star Projected To Get $15.6 Million Contract In Free Agency

Pittsburgh will have decisions to make this winter

The Pittsburgh Pirates took a step in the right direction in 2024, but were unable to earn a playoff spot.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to be excited about in Pittsburgh, though. The Pirates are full of exciting, young talent and won’t have too much turnover this offseason unless they decide to add in free agency or trade some of their players away. Pittsburgh doesn’t have many free agents, but one star will be available.

Six-time All-Star Aroldis Chapman was a great pickup for the Pirates last offseason in free agency. He appeared in 68 games with the Pirates in 2024 and had a 3.79 ERA to go along with a 98-to-39 strikeout-to-walk ratio in just 61 2/3 innings pitched. Chapman was everything the Pirates could’ve hoped for, but he will be a free agent this winter.

It’s far too early to know if Pittsburgh will bring him back. It could make a lot of sense. He could give the Pirates a dependable setup man once again, but will be expensive. Chapman now is 36 years old but is projected to get a two-year deal this winter worth roughly $15.6 million, according to Spotrac.

Chapman signed a one-year deal worth $10.5 million with the Pirates ahead of the 2024 campaign. Pittsburgh should consider a reunion with the veteran, but there will be other bullpen options out there in free agency at cheaper costs in free agency. Everything at this point is pure speculation with the playoffs still ongoing.
