Steelers Veteran Quarterback Finally Nearing Return From Injury

Russell Wilson is close to returning to the field

The Pittsburgh Steelers seem close to having a key player return from injury after nearly two months.

Quarterback Russell Wilson signed with the Steelers during the offseason and was primed to be their starter. The veteran signal-caller signed a veteran’s minimum contract worth just over $1 million, leaving the rest of his salary to be paid by the Denver Broncos. Early on in training camp, Wilson suffered a calf injury which has held him out since. Justin Fields has answered the call for Pittsburgh with Wilson out and excelled.

Fields have led the Steelers to a 3-1 record, most recently losing to the Indianapolis Colts 27-24. Despite the loss, Fields had his best statistical game, throwing for 312 yards and a touchdown while adding 55 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Wilson would be the starter for Pittsburgh, but there was a lot of speculation on who would start when Fields performed well.

Wilson will likely be healthy and a full participant in practice by the end of the week according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport.

“Russell Wilson, if all goes well, likely ends this week as a full participant,” Rapoport reported. “And Justin Fields continues to start.”

Head Coach Mike Tomlin has actively avoided naming a starting quarterback moving forward, but it appears Fields will remain the starter for the Steelers Week 5 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. Wilson is a decorated Super Bowl champion and nine-time Pro-Bowler, so it will be interesting to see how the starting quarterback situation unfolds in Pittsburgh.
