The Pirates called up infielder Nick York from Triple-A Indianapolis, the team announced Monday. The 22-year-old will make his major league debut and bat seventh in the lineup when Pittsburgh faces the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
Yorke was acquired from the Boston Red Sox at the trade deadline for pitcher Quinn Priester. Since being acquired by the Pirates, Yorke has played 40 games at Triple-A Indianapolis. He’s been on a tear, slashing .355/.431/.507 with two home runs, 17 doubles, 26 RBIs and four stolen bases.
Although he is starting at second base in his major league debut, he has started in the outfield several times in Indianapolis and bounced between the infield and outfield with the Red Sox organization. Yorke was also Rule 5 eligible this offseason, giving the Pirates an incentive to add him to the 40-man roster and see what he can do at the next level.
Pittsburgh’s No. 6 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, began the 2024 campaign with Double-A Portland before being moved up to Triple-A Worcester on June 5. In his Triple-A debut, Yorke batted .310 with six homers and 19 RBIs during the seven weeks he played for the WooSox.
To make room for Yorke on the roster, the club optioned infielder Alika Williams to the Triple-A Indians. Williams had 18 hits and five RBIs in 37 games across three stints with Pittsburgh this season. He walked twice and struck out 22 times in 96 plate appearances. Willaims has two triples and nine doubles, 13 RBIs and two stolen bases in 36 Triple-A games this season.
