The Pittsburgh Steelers have decided on their starting quarterback, at least for the next couple of weeks.
The Steelers added Russell Wilson and Justin Fields this offseason as they revamped their offense. Wilson was considered the guaranteed starter before injuring his calf at the beginning of training camp. This opened the door for Fields to impress and make his case why he should helm the offense in the regular season.
Fields led the Steelers to a Week 1 victory against the Atlanta Falcons after Wilson’s injury flared up. Although Pittsburgh did not have an offensive touchdown in that game, they still won 18-10 with Fields throwing for 156 yards and rushing for another 57 yards. With Wilson’s availability still in question, the Steelers may continue with Fields leading the way.
Fields is set to be the projected starter of the Steelers’ offense through Week 3 according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
“According to sources, the Steelers plan to have Justin Fields start the next two games — Sunday in Denver against the Broncos and the home opener Sept. 22 against the Los Angeles Chargers — while Russell Wilson continues to rest his injured calf so it doesn’t morph into something worse,” Dulac writes.

“By that time, especially if the Steelers are 3-0 with Fields as their quarterback, the gossip, conjecture and narrative will increase to royal-tabloid measures.”
Wilson is a Super Bowl champion and nine-time Pro-Bowler, but if Fields proves himself the Steelers may stick with what is working. Depending on how the next two games go, Pittsburgh may have to rethink who will lead them throughout the rest of the season.
