The Penguins are dealing with one player at a time when it comes to contract extensions.
Sidney Crosby and Marcus Pettersson don’t currently have extensions in place with Pittsburgh, and though the club reportedly wants to reach an agreement with both players, Crosby is priority No. 1.
“Sidney Crosby is the obvious priority for Pittsburgh, but after his new contract is finalized, the Penguins are expected to begin formal talks with Marcus Pettersson on an extension, as well,” The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta posted to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday.
Pettersson is a pending unrestricted free agent, much like Crosby. He currently makes $4.02 million and could be in line for a raise as a top-four defenseman who led the team with a plus-28 rating, double that of the closest teammate Drew O’Connor, last season. It’s been an interesting discussion for Penguins fans, who aren’t totally sold that an extension for Pettersson will be good for the team moving forward.
Crosby is “pretty optimistic” his extension will be done soon, which means Pettersson’s might not be far behind.
