The Pittsburgh Steelers played their style of football in Week 1 and walked away with a victory.
Despite being unable to score a touchdown, the Steelers took down the favored Atlanta Falcons on the road this past Sunday to kick off their season 1-0. Justin Fields led the team with Russell Wilson unable to play, setting up kick Chris Boswell to hit six field goals in the game to get the 18-10 win.
In ESPN’s Week 2 power rankings, the Steelers leaped from 16 to 11 following the win over the Falcons. ESPN’s power rankings also highlighted the best newcomer performance for each team in Week 1. ESPN’s Brooke Pryor wrote about safety DeShon Elliott’s impact in the victory over the Falcons.
“Elliott, one of several offseason defensive acquisitions who made a splash Sunday, got the first interception of the game and had two passes defended,” Pryor wrote. “The pick came in the first quarter as Falcons QB Kirk Cousins threw a ball over the middle to WR Drake London. Elliott dove in front of London and snagged the pass. It was such a well-timed, anticipatory play that fellow newcomer Donte Jackson started celebrating the interception before Elliott even had the ball. The Steelers’ depth in the secondary is still thin, but Elliott made the game-changing plays needed to support a developing offense.”
Elliott and the Steelers will look to follow up the Week 1 win with more success in Week 2 when they take on the struggling Denver Broncos on the road. Kickoff is set for Sunday at 4:25 p.m. EST.
