Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin isn’t giving any definitive answers when it comes to questions surrounding Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
“As I sit here today, we’re preparing as if Justin is going to be our quarterback,” Tomlin told reporters Tuesday, per ESPN. “I think that’s the appropriate way to do it. Speculation is a waste of time. Russell’s hurt. He is not available to us. And so, as you guys know, as a general practice, I focus my energy on those that are available and their readiness.”
How about moving forward? Wilson would be starting if he was healthy, right?
“That’s a big if,” Tomlin said. “I’m not into the hypotheticals. As I mentioned, right now, he’s not healthy. And so my time and attention is focusing on the readiness of Justin.”
Tomlin was pretty definitive two weeks ago when he announced Wilson won the job over Fields and would start Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons. What changed? Wilson got hurt, Fields took over, the Steeler ran all over the place and started the season 1-0. Is it possible that was enough to change Tomlin’s mind?

It should be.
Fields did exactly what the Steelers needed him to do against the Falcons, limiting mistakes (zero turnovers) and providing a boost to the running game (57 yards on 14 rushes). Pittsburgh doesn’t need much more than that, especially with how good the defense looked in Week 1. Fields’ biggest issue throughout his career has been his inability to sustain success, but the Steelers would be dumb not to allow him to do that in a system that clearly plays to his strengths.
It’s time to let Justin cook.
