Pirates’ GM ‘Fully Expects’ That Derek Shelton Will Manage Team In 2025

Pittsburgh will be busy this winter

There has been some speculation that the Pittsburgh Pirates could make some changes this winter.

Pittsburgh was in contention for a National League Wild Card spot for much of the summer but the second half of the season hasn’t been as successful for the club. The Pirates have struggled since the All-Star break despite adding some intriguing pieces and won’t be in the postseason.

Despite this, there still is a lot to like about the team. Pittsburgh took some steps forward this year and has the young talent needed to take another step forward in 2025 and maybe even make the postseason.

With the Pirates looking like they aren’t going to make the playoffs, some have wondered if Pittsburgh could make a change in the manager position. Derek Shelton currently is in the position and some have wondered if he could get let go.

While this is the case, general manager Ben Cherington “fully expects” him to be back in 2025, according to MLB.com’s Alex Stumpf.

“General manager Ben Cherington says he ‘fully expects Derek Shelton to be the Pirates’ manager in 2025,” Stumpf said.

Shelton took over the Pirates’ manager job ahead of the 2020 season. He has been with team ever since and has a 280-400 record. Pittsburgh has shown some signs of life this season and could make some noise next year. It sounds like it will be with Shelton in the dugout.
