It’s unclear who will be under center for the Pittsburgh Steelers when they take the field for Week 2 action against the Denver Broncos.
Pittsburgh had to make a last-second decision and pivot from Russell Wilson to Justin Fields ahead of the team’s Week 1 clash against the Atlanta Falcons. Fields looked good in the win but now it’s unclear who will take the field for Week 2 against the Broncos.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday that the Steelers “are planning to start” Fields in the clash.
“The Steelers are planning to start QB Justin Fields on Sunday once again, coach Mike Tomlin just told reporters,” Rapoport said. “QB Russell Wilson, who missed Week 1 with calf tightness, is feeling better. And he’ll be monitored. But no revenge game against the Broncos this weekend.”
Calf injuries are difficult to work with. If Wilson were to remove too quickly, it would be extremely easy to re-aggravate the ailment. Plus, a calf injury can also lead to an Achilles injury if not treated properly.

He still has a few days to progress in his recovery. If he is unable to practice throughout the week, Fields would be the easy choice to start against Denver. If he does end up practicing throughout the week, the decision could change and he could take the job back.
There was a quarterback competition throughout the summer because Wilson suffered the calf injury initially. It opened the door for Fields to shine in camp and that led many to speculate that he could land the the starting job. Wilson ultimately ended up earning the starting job, but the longer he is out, the more questions people will have.
