Justin Fields was called upon for the Pittsburgh Steelers and delivered in Week 1.
Despite losing the quarterback competition in the preseason, the 25-year-old had to step in for an injured Russell Wilson, whose calf injury returned and forced the long-time veteran to sit out. With Fields at the helm, the Steelers were able to pull off the upset victory over the Atlanta Falcons on the road — winning by a score of 18-10.
The Steelers’ offense couldn’t score a touchdown, continuing their problems highlighted in the preseason. That being said, Chris Boswell played the hero for Pittsburgh when he went 6-for-6 on field goals, including 3-for-3 from beyond 50 yards out, which featured a long of 57 yards.
Fields played a serviceable game to lead Pittsburgh to the win. He went 17-for-23 through the air, good for 156 passing yards. The former first-round pick also added 57 rushing yards on 14 attempts. The most important aspect of Fields’ game is that he didn’t turn the ball over, which was a big reason the Steelers pulled off the big win.
With the win in Week 1, Pittsburgh is the lone team in the AFC North with a win as the Cincinnati Bengals were upset by the New England Patriots, the Cleveland Browns were dominated by the Dallas Cowboys, and the Baltimore Ravens dropped one to the Kansas City Chiefs.
