The Pittsburgh Steelers may end up having the young signal caller under center for Week 1 action after all.
Pittsburgh was in a quarterback competition throughout the summer between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. A calf injury opened the door for Fields to have more opportunities throughout the summer and turn it into a real competition. Wilson won the job, though, and was named the starter.
Recently, his calf injury has popped up again, though. He officially was listed as questionable for the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. It’s certainly still up in the air who will start, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said that it’s “more likely” that Fields gets the nod due to Wilson’s injury.
“From NFL Game Day Kickoff: It appears more likely that Justin Fields starts on Sunday for the Steelers than Russell Wilson, though Wilson will be examined Saturday,” Rapoport said.
If Wilson is healthy enough, he likely will get the start. But, the fact that Rapoport already is saying that it looks like Fields will get the nod must mean that Wilson’s injury isn’t anything light. Calf injuries are tricky and can cause other injuries if not treated properly. Calf injuries can lead to Achilles’ injuries very quickly if not properly rehabbed.

Hopefully, Wilson is alright and will make a full recovery in the near future. No matter what, the Steelers will be in a better position no matter which of the two is under center in Week 1. If Fields does get to start, it will be a great opportunity for him to prove himself moving forward with the team.
