Steelers ‘Would Like To Sign’ Playmaker To Extension Soon, Per Insider

Will Pittsburgh strike a deal?

Will the Pittsburgh Steelers find a way to keep one of their playmakers around for the long-term?

Tight end Pat Freiermuth has become an integral part of the Steelers’ offense but he is entering his final season before hitting free agency. The 25-year-old is due to hit free agency at the end of the season, but it sounds like Pittsburgh would like to avoid that fact.

Pittsburgh reportedly “would like to sign” the young tight end ahead of the team’s Week 1 clash against the Atlanta Falcons, according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler.

“Other names that should be watched closely include Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth, who the team would like to sign before Sunday,” Graziano and Fowler said.

It’s unclear at this point if the Steelers will be able to get a deal done before the matchup with the Falcons, but it would make sense to do so. If Freiermuth hits the open market next offseason, he likely will be among the top tight ends available certainly will be more expensive to sign than he would be right now.

He has shown some great promise for the Steelers and had a down year last year and appeared in 12 games, but wasn’t fully healthy. He had 308 receiving yards on 32 receptions. The two previous seasons, he hauled in at least sixty catches and had a career-high 732 receiving yards in 2022. An extension is a no-brainer for the Steelers and hopefully the two sides can agree to a deal before it’s too late.
