Steelers Urged To Sign All-Pro Cornerback Ahead of Season Opener

Will the Steelers add the star cornerback?

The Pittsburgh Steelers added many new players in the offseason as they strive towards a deep playoff run this season.

The Steelers went 10-7 in the regular season last year but unfortunately lost in the first-round of the playoffs to the Buffalo Bills. Pittsburgh went into the offseason with a few holes in their roster that they needed to fill. They did just that when they signed All-Pro Russell Wilson to helm the offense.

Pittsburgh also added pieces to their defense in the offseason. They signed linebacker Patrick Queen and acquired Donte Jackson from the Carolina Panthers in the trade for Diontae Johnson. The Steelers still have areas they can improve in.

In order to add depth at cornerback, Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine suggests that the Steelers sign former Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard.

“Another week, another suggestion that the Steelers do something to address their secondary,” Ballentine wrote. “This is a team that is going to win games with defense and the lack of depth in the defensive backfield is downright scary. Joey Porter Jr. is a promising starter after a good rookie year. They traded for Donte Jackson to be the other outside corner and Beanie Bishop Jr. has stood out in camp in the slot.”

“After that, it’s Darius Rush and Cory Trice Jr. on the active roster. Xavien Howard is the best cornerback available. They’d have to kick someone inside to form a new starting trio but it would be a drastic improvement over what they have.”

Pittsburgh has the cap space available to go sign Howard to a short term deal. The four-time Pro Bowler and former All-Pro would be a great addition to an already scary defense. The Steelers open up their season facing off against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1.
