Steelers’ Russell Wilson Projected To Be Among First QBs Benched

Is Justin Fields ready to make another push?

Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson officially won the starting job during training camp, edging out Justin Fields in a competition that was closer than many expected.

Fields might soon make another push, however.

Wilson has the shortest odds to be benched of any QB in 2024, according to SportsBetting.aq. It’s not as if he’s expected to get injured in his 13th season, either, as injuries cannot contribute to the decision.

First QB Benched
Russell Wilson (+350)
Jacoby Brissett (+300)
Gardner Minshew (+400)
Will Levis (+900)
Daniel Jones (+1000)
Geno Smith (+1000)
Bryce Young (+1200)
Sam Darnold (+1200)

The Steelers signed Wilson to a one-year deal after he was released by the Denver Broncos, bringing him in to compete for the job alongside Fields. Pittsburgh allowed both to see first-team reps throughout the summer, but it became clear that Wilson would win the job as the preseason progressed.

Wilson was named a captain Monday.

Pittsburgh looks to get the season started on the right foot, with Wilson leading the way against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1. The Steelers will first take the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
