CBS Sports Predict Pirates To Turn It Around In 2025 MLB Season

Pittsburgh has the pieces to turn it around

The Pittsburgh Pirates most likely will not be making the postseason this year, unfortunately.

Pittsburgh began the season 17-22 before calling up superstar fireballer Paul Skenes. Things changed for Pittsburgh after that with the starting rotation leading the way for the team as they closed out the first half of the season at 48-48. Skenes and Bryan Reynolds made the All-Star game with Skenes being named the starting pitcher for the National League.

The Pirates hit a rough patch with a ten-game losing streak following the All-Star break and are essentially out of playoff contention. Pittsburgh is ten games back from the third Wild Card spot, and with around 25 games left this season, likely does not have the time to catch up.

After another season sitting below .500, CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson predicts that Pittsburgh has the third-best chance to turn things around in the 2025 Major League Baseball season.

“As we’ve detailed before, there’s no time like the present for a team with as good of a one-two punch as the Pirates have in Paul Skenes and Jared Jones,” Anderson reported. “The scary thing is they have even more exciting young pitching talent on the way, including Bubba Chandler, Mike Burrows, and Braxton Ashcraft.”

“Ideally, the Pirates would spend the winter fortifying their lineup. We’re sure general manager Ben Cherington wants to; we’re not so sure owner Bob Nutting will let him. That’s the only obstacle keeping the Pirates away from being the most obvious team on the rise in the majors.”

Pittsburgh has a great rotation led by Skenes, Jones, and Mitch Keller. Offensively, they have Reynolds leading the way along with Oneil Cruz. The Pirates also were active at the trade deadline acquiring Bryan De La Cruz and Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The Pirates team has young talent and a bright future.
