The Pittsburgh Steelers certainly have been busy since the 2023 National Football League season came to an end.
Pittsburgh won 10 games last season and looks like a team ready to win more in 2024. One of the biggest reasons for this is the fact that the Steelers should have a major upgrade at the quarterback position this season. The Steelers acquired nine-time Pro Bowler Russell Wilson and also former first-round draft pick Justin Fields.
Wilson and Fields competed for the starting job throughout the summer with the former Seattle Seahawks star ultimately coming away with the nod. Pittsburgh should be better in 2024, but after the season it will have to determine a plan for the long-term future of the quarterback position.
The most likely option currently looks like an extension with Fields. He is just 25 years old and has shown flashes of a franchise quarterback. If the Steelers decide to take a look into free agency, though, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio linked them to Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
“Between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, most assume that one will be winning a Water-Pik and the other will be getting fired after 2024,” Florio said. “The Steelers could choose to fire both, depending on what happens this year. They cleared out the quarterback depth chart after a playoff berth in 2023. They could do it again.

“Would they pay Dak market value? Here’s the thing about free agency. Dak could choose to go to a team and a coach for less than market value. After having Jerry Jones try to persuade him for years to take less than he could get elsewhere, Dak could stick it to the Cowboys by choosing to take less from one of their biggest AFC rivals.”
Prescott would be a great option, but he likely will land a historic contract. Signing Fields to an extension would be a cheaper option and likely pay off in the long run.
