NFL Insider Says It Will Be Surprise If Steelers Don’t Start Russell Wilson

Wilson got the start in back-to-back preseason games

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still trying to figure out who will start Week 1 under center.

One of the main conversations of the NFL preseason has been about who will start at quarterback for the Steelers. Head coach Mike Tomlin revealed after the team’s preseason game against the Detroit Lions that he’d decide between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields by the end of the week.

On Monday’s edition of “Get Up” on ESPN, NFL insider Adam Schefter shared his thoughts on the Steelers quarterback situation, saying it’d be a “surprise” if Wilson isn’t named starter by head coach Mike Tomlin at the end of the week.

“I think most people would be surprised if it weren’t Russell Wilson,” Schefter said on “Get Up.” “I think Mike Tomlin has been pretty clear from the outset of the offseason that Russell Wilson has been, to use his words, in the ‘pole position.’ And Russell Wilson has played well enough to win that job, to keep that job, however you want to phrase it. And again, that doesn’t mean that it’s going to be a long leash. It doesn’t mean we’re not going to see Justin Fields at some point in time but I think it would be a surprise if he went Justin Fields over Russell Wilson to open the season.”

Whoever is officially named starter by the Steelers will lead the team onto the field in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons. Pittsburgh kicks off their 2024 campaign on Sep. 8 at 1 p.m. EST.
