The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback battle will finally be resolved before their Week 1 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
Pittsburgh brought in quarterbacks Justin Fields and Russell Wilson after going 10-7 in the regular season and losing in the first-round of the playoffs last season.
When training camp began, Wilson began in “pole position” to be the Steelers starting quarterback. After an injury sidelined Wilson, Fields took advantage of the opportunity and excelled playing with the starters. As training camp progressed, the rumors about who would be the starter ran rampant.
In Pittsburgh’s most recent preseason game against the Detroit Lions, Wilson began the game as the starter. Both Wilson and Fields led a touchdown drive in Pittsburgh’s final preseason game. Coach Mike Tomlin set a timeline for the Steelers’ starting quarterback decision when addressing the media following Pittsburgh’s preseason game against the Lions.
“We will make a decision at the end of our work week, the coming week” Tomlin said. “We got three days of Steelers vs. Steelers work and why not do it then? It kind of minimizes the Steelers vs. Steelers work when we start making decision prior to the completion of that. We’ve got ample time to prepare for Atlanta, and make whatever decisions or announcements regarding division of labor or pecking orders and so forth, so we’ll do it at the end of the work week.”

Although Tomlin hasn’t officially named a starter, the indication is that Wilson is in the lead to helm the offense to start the season. Either way, Wilson or Fields will be an upgrade for Pittsburgh’s offense and help them as they strive to make a deep playoff run.
