Russell Wilson Pushes Back On Concerns About Steelers’ Offense

Pittsburgh is averaging 7.5 points per game this preseason

The excitement stemming from the Pittsburgh Steelers offseason has shifted to uncertainty.

Well, at least for some outside the locker room. Steelers veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, however, is not among them.

“First of all, I think it’s preseason,” Wilson told reporters Wednesday, per a team-provided video. “I think there’s always highs. There’s some things we’ve done really well, there’s some thing we need to be better at. That’s part of playing. That’s part of the fun about the preseason is you learn things and you translate that to the practice field.

“Somebody asked me, ‘Are we concerned right now?’ Absolutely not. Absolutely not. The reason being is because the level of practices that we have had against one of the best defenses every day, and how we’ve shown up there.”

The Steelers averaged 7.5 points in their two preseason games, which were losses to the Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills.

Wilson played Pittsburgh’s first five drives against the Bills last week and took three sacks in five scoreless series. He completed eight of his 10 pass attempts for a mere 47 yards — his longest completion being a 13-yard dump-off to running back Jaylen Warren.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin pointed to the protection in front of Wilson and quarterback Justin Fields (11-for-17, 92 yards) as a key issue.

“I think the big thing for us is executing and us making our plays and doing our thing,” Wilson said.

It’s clear the veteran quarterback, who was acquired by the Steelers after fizzling out with Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos, is trying to remain patient.
